The Parliament of Moldova has ratified an agreement with Romania to regulate the construction of some water pipelines across the Prut.
The deputies also ratified the protocol on amendments to this document. The named intergovernmental agreement between Moldova and Romania was signed in Chisinau on May 20, 2021, and the protocol amending it was signed in Iasi on November 10, 2022. The purpose of the agreement is to build a water pipeline system across the Prut River to supply drinking water to the settlements of Ungheni, Nisporeni, Glodeni and Falesti regions of Moldova. The protocol amending the agreement corrects some provisions of the main document regarding the location of water pipes, for flexibility in decision-making and permissions for the underground passage of the system across the Prut River in other settlements agreed by the parties. According to the agreement, investments in the territory of Romania and Moldova, up to the points of connection, including crossing the border, will be carried out by the regional operator of water supply and sewerage of Romania. It will also require investments from the Moldovan side, which will be undertaken by the Moldovan government, in order to connect the settlements in the immediate vicinity of the water pipeline under construction. They should be correlated with the priorities set by the Cabinet and the funds available in the National Fund for Regional and Local Development. It is agreed that investments on Romanian territory and on Moldovan territory, up to connection points, including border crossings, will be carried out by the regional water supply and sewerage operator of Romania, and Moldova will pay the costs of connecting settlements in areas where the water pipeline will be built. It is planned that in general, the beneficiaries of the water pipelines, which will be built by the Romanian company Apavital across the Prut to supply drinking water from the Iasi county, will be 250 thousand residents of the Nisporeni, Ungheni, Glodeni and Falesti regions of Moldova. According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, a regional development project “Improving the quality of life of the rural population through the construction of a connecting water pipeline across the Prut River - the village of Macaresti with drinking water for 13 settlements of the Nisporeni and Ungheni regions is being implemented from the funds of the National Fund for Regional and Local Development. It provides for the construction of a 54-kilometer water pipeline, the connection of which will be underground in the village of Macaresti.// 01.12.2022 — InfoMarket
