
The population of Moldova, according to preliminary data, as of January 1, 2022, amounted to 2 million 604 thousand people.
As reported by the National Bureau of Statistics, in comparison with the situation as of January 1, 2021, the population of the country decreased by almost 23 thousand people (-9%). Data are based on demographic events and were calculated based on the population with usual residence who has lived in the country for the last 12 months (regardless of temporary absence). According to statistics, 29.2 thousand children were born in Moldova last year, which is 5.2% less than in the previous year. About 52% of newborns are boys. The birth rate in 2021 was 11.2 newborns per 1 thousand inhabitants (in 2020 - 11.7). The average age of a primiparous mother was 25.1 years, the same as a year earlier. In 2021, there were 1.73 children per woman of reproductive age, and 2.1 children are needed to reproduce generations. Last year, 45.5 thousand people died in Moldova, which is 11.6% more than in the previous year. About 52% of the dead are men: for every 100 female deaths, there were 106 male deaths. One of the reasons for the increase in mortality is the COVID-19 pandemic: last year, 6755 people died from complications after the virus - 3139 men and 3616 women. Cardiovascular diseases remain the main cause of death, accounting for 58.7% of deaths among women and 48% among men, as well as oncological diseases - 10.6% among women and 14.7% - among men. The negative population growth amounted to 16.2 thousand people (in 2020 - 9.9 thousand people). Last year, 22.5 thousand marriages were registered (1.5 times more than in 2020) and 9.9 thousand divorces (+12.6%). Thus, there were 8.6 marriages and 3.8 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants. The average age of first marriage among women was 26 years, among men - 29 years, at the average age of women dissolving a marriage - 37.4 years, men - 40.7 years. The average duration of a marriage ending in divorce was 12 years. About 25.6% of divorces occurred after 5-9 years of marriage, 24.3% - during the first 5 years of marriage, 21.3% - after 20 years of marriage. According to statistics, last year 35 thousand people changed their place of residence within the country, 87% of them are of working age (20-49 years).
