
The total public debt of Moldova in February 2021, in comparison with the previous month, increased by 1 billion 450.9 million lei (+ 2.1%) and reached a new record level of 69 billion 795 million lei.
The previous historical maximum of the total public debt of Moldova was 68 billion 344.1 million lei and was registered at the end of January 2021. In general, since the beginning of 2021, the total public debt of the country increased by 1 billion 974.3 million lei (+ 2.9%). According to the Ministry of Finance of Moldova, the increase in the total public debt in the first 2 months this year was due to the growth of both internal and external public debt, expressed in lei. In particular, the internal public debt increased by 1 billion 486.5 million lei (+ 5.1%) - from 29 billion 235.6 million lei (at the end of December 2020) to 30 billion 722.1 million lei (at the end of February 2021). Herewith, the external public debt in lei terms for the same period increased by 487.8 million lei (+ 1.3%) - from 38 billion 585.1 million to 39 billion 072.9 million lei. At the same time, the share of the domestic public debt in the total amount of the public debt of Moldova at the end of February 2021 amounted to 44% (a month earlier - 43.5%), and the share of the external public debt - 56% (56.5%). In general, the share of total public debt in GDP at the end of February 2021 is estimated at 31.5% versus 30.8% at the end of January 2021 and 33.5% at the end of 2020. The share of public debt payable within one year was 26.9% of the total, while the Public Debt Management in the Medium Term (2021-2023) Program provides for 15-25%. The share of domestic public debt in the total volume of public debt was 44% (previously approved parameters: 35-50%), the share of external public debt in a certain currency in the total volume of external public debt at the end of February 2021 was 32.5% (approved parameters: 20 -40%). The share of public debt with a variable interest rate in the total volume of public debt at the end of February 2021 was 38.8% with the parameters of 25-40%.
