Moldova runs the risk of being left without a new program with the IMF due to political instability, and all politicians need to understand this and make efforts to put the interests of the country at the forefront - Octavian Armasu.
This was stated by the President of the National Bank of Moldova during a briefing on Wednesday, noting that due to the political crisis, Moldova runs the risk of being left without a new program with the IMF, and, first of all, the country and its citizens will suffer from this. The head of the National Bank called on all politicians, authorities, state institutions to unite efforts to put the interests of the country above all, stressing that Moldova needs funds for further development, especially in the current situation of a pandemic and economic crisis, and external donors are ready to provide funding, but due to political crisis Moldova runs the risk of being left without help, since it is difficult to obtain it without acceptable political stability. Earlier, Prime Minister Ion Chicu noted that it would be difficult for Moldova to count on the approval of the new Program with the IMF this year, if the last precondition concerning the appointment of three NBM vice-presidents by the parliament is not fulfilled in the very near future. He recalled that the government, for its part, fulfilled all the preconditions agreed with the IMF, including, adopted a draft law aimed at strengthening the independence of the National Bank. This document was adopted in two readings and by the parliament. But there is one more, the last obligation of the Moldovan side, concerning the appointment by the parliament of three vice-presidents of the National Bank. If it is not implemented in the near future, it will be difficult to achieve the conclusion of a new Program with the IMF before the end of this year, given that Christmas and New Year holidays are coming soon, and the IMF is not working at this time. As InfoMarket reported earlier, the cost of the new program of cooperation between Moldova and the IMF is $ 558 million, and it is scheduled to be implemented within 3 years. It was planned that the program itself could be approved by the IMF Board of Directors in December 2020. And the financial assistance allocated by the fund will be used to revive the Moldovan economy and overcome the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to carry out institutional reforms.//09.12.2020 — InfoMarket.
