The European Commission will hold a meeting with representatives of the Moldovan government this week to solve energy supplies issues
According to European Commission Spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen at a briefing in Brussels on January 6, in particular, a meeting of a working group on energy issues will be held this week with the participation of representatives of the European Commission and the Moldovan government in order to find a solution to the issue with energy supplies to the entire territory of the state. According to the European Commission, the working group with Moldova on energy issues will meet “already later this week” at a technical level. “We have set up a working group with Moldova to help them with their current challenges. This group last met on December 18, and it will meet at the technical level again - already later this week,” Itkonen said. She said measures have also been “taken to facilitate the exchange of electricity through the existing networks” with the EU to make sure that more electricity can be supplied through them if there is a need. “At the same time, we call on all member states to show solidarity with Moldova,” Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said. She said that during the working group meeting this week, the European side will listen to Moldova's representatives and learn about their priority needs to solve the energy crisis. “We understand that the Moldovan government has already offered electricity as well as humanitarian aid to Transnistria, which has not yet been accepted. We urge Tiraspol to cooperate with Chisinau to resolve the situation in the interests of the local population,” European Commission Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Anita Hipper added. Let us remind you that on January 1, Transnistria stopped receiving Russian gas, due to which the gas supply to tens of thousands of household consumers was cut off and the work of the local industry stopped. The Transnistrian authorities urged the residents to solve the problem with the help of electric heaters, as electricity is still available since Moldavskaya GRES continues to work on coal reserves. According to forecasts, they should be sufficient until the end of winter, but with a sharp “jump” in electricity consumption to compensate for the lack of gas and the onset of cold weather, they may run out much faster. The Moldovan government has already stated that there will be enough coal only until the end of January. Since January 3, Transnistria has introduced fan blackouts. // 09.01.2025 - InfoMarket
