Moldova: Gross agricultural production in the first half of 2024 increased by 5.5% in comparable prices, relative to the same period in 2023

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported this without giving specific data in value terms. According to preliminary estimates, in January-June 2024, compared to the corresponding period of 2023, gross output of crop production in farms of all categories (agricultural enterprises, peasant farms and households) increased by 13%, while livestock production increased by 4.4%. According to the NBS, in particular, 1 million 560.8 thousand hectares were sown for the 2024 harvest in farms of all categories, which is 22.5 thousand hectares (1.4%) less than in 2023. The structure of sown areas of agricultural crops by category of producers shows that the largest share falls on agricultural enterprises, which accounted for 885.5 thousand hectares (57% of the total sown area of the country). Peasant farms accounted for 382.5 thousand hectares (24% of the total sown area), and households accounted for 292.8 thousand hectares (19%). Agricultural enterprises still account for the majority of sown areas under sugar beet (92% of the total area sown under this crop), rape (87%), corn for silage and green mass (83%), wheat (78%), barley (74%), sunflower (68%), soybean (61%), annual grasses (58%). At the same time, households and peasant farms hold 96% of the areas sown with potatoes, 94% of the areas sown with melons, 93% of the areas sown with field vegetables, 79% of the areas sown with perennial grasses, 67% of the areas sown with corn for grain, 59% of the areas sown with leguminous crops. According to the NBS, in particular, in January-June 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year, the cultivation of livestock and poultry (live weight) in all categories of farms increased by 10.1%, amounting to 82.9 thousand tons in physical terms. This was the result of increase in the indicators of production (growing) of livestock and poultry at agricultural enterprises by 17.7% - up to 54.1 thousand tons, while in households growing of livestock and poultry decreased by 1.8% - up to 28.8 thousand tons. Production of cow's milk in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period last year, decreased by 1.3% - to 137.1 thousand tons. At the same time, its production at agricultural enterprises increased by 18.8% - to 24.7 thousand tons, and in households decreased by 4.9% - to 112.4 thousand tons. Production of eggs in farms of all categories in January-June 2024, compared to the same period of 2023, decreased by 10.5% - to 287.4 million pieces as a result of decline in their production in households by 19.8% - to 142.2 million pieces.
