For the first time, clear standards for the construction and repair of border customs posts are being introduced in Moldova.

This was reported by representatives of the USAID program "Institutional and Structural Reforms in Moldova - MISRA", noting that, almost 33 years after gaining independence, Moldova is taking an important step towards modernizing its border control infrastructure. A comprehensive technical standards manual for Customs, developed with support from USAID's Moldova Institutional and Structural Reform (MISRA) program, will make a significant contribution to optimizing the efficiency, security and functionality of border customs posts. The manual includes a detailed description of infrastructure and facilities with graphic images; regulatory requirements that will serve as an important tool in the development of land border customs posts. This information will contribute to the development of technical specifications necessary for the design and construction of border customs posts, improving the activities of government agencies operating there, and facilitating cross-border trade. As noted, most of the 60 border customs posts of Moldova were created during the Soviet period, with the exception of the joint customs control post Palanca-Mayaki-Udobnoye, opened in 2019. At the same time, restoration work at the border customs post in Sculeni has been completed, and construction projects new border customs posts - Leova-Bumbata, Ungheni-Ungheni and Cosauti-Yampol - are in the process of development. However, there were no clear technical requirements for the construction and reconstruction of border customs posts. This gap has prevented the development of a unified and effective approach to modernizing border control infrastructure. For this reason, Customs, with the support of MISRA, initiated the development of a comprehensive manual with technical standards. During the development process, were analyzed relevant legislation and procedures required by authorities, as well as construction site specifications. The development of the Guidelines was a historic event for Moldova, providing a standardized and consistent framework needed for the design, construction and modernization of border control infrastructure.// 02.05.2024 – InfoMarket.
