The NBM delegation met in Washington with the head of the IMF Mission for Moldova, Clara Mira, discussing with her macroeconomic prospects, the implementation of the program with the IMF and the reform program of the National Bank.

As noted in the message of the National Bank of Moldova, the meeting of the NBM delegation led by President Anca Dragu took place in Washington as part of a visit to the United States to participate in the spring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group, which will be held in Washington from April 15 to 20. In particular, during the first meeting with Clara Mira, Anca Dragu presented the macroeconomic evolution in Moldova and development prospects, the progress of the program with the IMF, the reform program of the National Bank to meet the criteria for Moldova’s accession to the European Union. “The effectiveness of banking reform is widely recognized and appreciated, including by our partners and international organizations. At the same time, we are aware of the expectations of the beneficiaries of financial services, especially small and medium-sized businesses, which have the potential to grow the economy. We are also very active in payment services, which we all know are essential for both citizens and businesses. We are also working hard to improve regulation and oversight of the insurance system. The unconditional priority is European integration, in which the NBM fully participates,” the NBM President emphasized. In the coming days, the NBM delegation will continue negotiations with high-ranking representatives of the IMF, World Bank, European Commission and EBRD. The delegation will also take part in the meeting of the IMF Constituent Assembly, which includes Moldova and 15 other countries from the Benelux region, the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, as well as Andorra, Cyprus and Israel. The agenda of the visit also includes the participation of the Moldovan delegation in the 10th Moldovan-American Congress, aimed at strengthening ties between the authorities and Moldovan communities in the United States and Canada. The IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings provide an unique opportunity to exchange countries' experiences and views on economic development and financial stability in the context of current regional and global developments, as well as over the long term. They are attended by representatives of similar bodies of all countries where the presence of two international organizations is registered, as well as representatives of entities and organizations - development partners. Discussions this year will focus on the evolution and prospects of the global economy, the promotion of effective monetary policy, structural reforms, measures to ensure financial stability and the sustainability of the banking and non-banking financial sectors. Topics that will be addressed include restoring financial sustainability, including public debt sustainability, strengthening productivity and economic growth, implementing the climate agenda, digital currency, fintech, increasing IMF capital through a general review of IMF quotas, reviewing IMF fiscal policies, and strengthening the IMF's capacity to providing support to Member States. // 15.04.2024 — InfoMarket.
