
IBRD and IDA will provide Moldova with $106 million to modernize the road infrastructure of the checkpoint on the border with Romania.
At a meeting on March 20, the government approved the start of negotiations with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association and the composition of the negotiating group with external partners regarding the implementation of the project “Connecting the Villages of Moldova” (Conectivitate rurală in Moldova). The project provides for the rehabilitation of more than 120 km of roads, as well as the modernization and improvement of security and checkpoints of Moldova on the border with Romania. As noted by the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spinu, repairs are planned in 3 sections: Corridor 5, R13 - Ivanovca-Izvoare-Varnița-Ocolina-M2 with a length of 35 km; Corridor 8.1 and Corridor 8.2 - Cornești-Boghenii Noi – Napadeni-M5 (G88) with a length of 33 km; Corridor 24 - R34-Ciobălaccia-Tărtaul-R56-Baimaclia-Enichioi-R37 with a length of 43 km. As part of the project, the transport infrastructure adjacent to local roads will be improved, it is planned to modernize customs posts in Leuseni and Giurgiulesti, as well as the construction of a border checkpoint in Ungheni. According to preliminary information, the IBRD will provide $100 million to Moldova for the implementation of this project, and the IDA - about $6 million.
