Operatorul Pieței de Energie M has been appointed electricity market operator of Moldova.
Operatorul Pieței de Energie M is a branch of the Romanian electricity market operator OPCOM. According to the government decision, it will be responsible for the establishment and operation of organized electricity markets in Moldova. The market operator will be responsible for managing and facilitating electricity market transactions and operations. Thanks to the operator, the electricity market will function more efficiently, ensuring better energy supply and optimizing the use of available resources. The electricity market operator should promote transparency and competition in the electricity market. By establishing and enforcing fair and equitable rules, it will create a market environment in which all participants have an equal opportunity to compete, which can lead to lower prices, to more competitive prices for consumers. The efficient operation of the electricity market operator will facilitate the management of risks associated with the supply and trade of electricity. This is important to prevent significant price fluctuations and ensure stability of electricity supply. As previously noted by the Ministry of Energy, circumstances in the electricity market in 2022 in the context of the energy crisis highlighted the insufficiency of instruments necessary for the proper functioning of the electricity market. In connection with the entry into force of the Electricity Market Rules from June 1, 2022, in order to accelerate the development of the electricity market, it is necessary to create/appoint an electricity market operator in Moldova to organize local short-term markets, day-ahead market, intraday market and to ensure their future interconnection with other centralized markets in Europe (Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) and Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC)), as without such an operator it is impossible to create a truly competitive and functional market. The costs of functioning of organized electricity markets will be borne by the designated operator and market participants in accordance with the Electricity Market Rules. At the same time, participants in organized electricity markets managed by the electricity market operator will be obliged to pay it the regulated tariff for the electricity market operation service, in accordance with the Law on Electricity and the Methodology for the calculation, approval and application of the regulated tariff for the electricity market operation service, approved by the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE). // 21.02.2024 – InfoMarket
