The total public debt of Moldova in April 2023 increased by more than 2.44 billion lei (+2.5%) and reached a new record high, exceeding 99.03 billion lei.
It should be noted that the previous historical maximum of the total public debt of Moldova amounted to 98 billion 277.6 million lei and was registered at the end of January 2023. According to the Ministry of Finance, in particular, at the end of April 2023, the total public debt of Moldova amounted to 99 billion 031.6 million lei and increased, in comparison with the previous month, by 2 billion 445.2 million lei (+2.5%). At the same time, in general, since the beginning of the year, it has grown by 4 billion 371.5 million lei (+4.6%). According to the Ministry of Finance of Moldova, the growth of the total public debt in January-April 2023 was due to an increase in both internal and external public debt. In particular, domestic public debt increased by 1 billion 849.3 million lei (+5.4%) - from 34 billion 492.4 million lei (at the end of December 2022) to 36 billion 341.7 million lei (at the end of April 2023). Herewith, the external public debt in lei over the same period increased by 2 billion 522.2 million lei (+4.2%) - from 60 billion 167.7 million to 62 billion 689.9 million lei. Meanwhile, the share of internal public debt in the total amount of public debt of Moldova at the end of April 2023 amounted to 36.7% (a month earlier - 36.1%), and the share of external public debt - 63.3% (a month earlier - 63.9%). In general, the share of total public debt in GDP at the end of April 2023 is estimated at 32.1% against 34.7% at the end of 2022. Thus, according to preliminary data, GDP in 2022 amounted to 272.55 billion lei, and according to by the end of 2023, it is projected at the level of 308.8 billion lei. The Ministry of Finance noted that at the end of April 2023, the share of public debt payable within 1 year amounted to 28.6% of the total, the share of domestic public debt in the total public debt was 36.7%. The share of external public debt in a certain currency in the total volume of external public debt at the end of April 2023 amounted to 39.8%, and the share of public debt with a variable interest rate in the total volume of public debt as of the same date was 49.6%.
