Moldova’s internal public debt increased in February 2023 by 5.01 million lei (+0.01%) and reached a new record high of 35 billion 086.4 million lei.

Overall, since the beginning of this year, it increased by 594 million lei (+1.7%). It should be noted that the previous record figure of internal public debt of Moldova was registered a month earlier - at the end of January 2023, when it amounted to 35 billion 081.39 million lei. According to the Ministry of Finance, the growth of the internal public debt registered in January-February 2023 was mainly due to the increase in government securities issuance on the primary market for a total of about 625.4 million lei. In particular, at the end of February 2023, the debt on government securities issued on the primary market amounted to about 20 billion 815.19 million lei, which is by 625.4 million lei more (3.1%) than at the end of 2022 (20 billion 189.79 million lei), and accounted for 59.3% of the total internal state debt. At the same time, the debt on bonds issued for the fulfillment by the Ministry of Finance of payment obligations arising from state guarantees dated November 17, 2014 and April 1, 2015 at the end of February 2023 amounted to 12 billion 061.2 million lei, without changing, compared to the situation at the end of 2021. It accounted for 34.4% of the total amount of Moldova's internal public debt at the end of February 2023. At the same time, the debt on converted government securities at the end of February 2023 amounted to 2 billion 209.99 million lei, decreasing, relative to the situation at the end of 2022 (2 billion 241.37 million), by 31.38 million lei (-1.4%) and amounting to 6.3% of the total amount of internal public debt as of the end of February 2023. According to the Ministry of Finance, in January-February 2023, the weighted average interest rate on government securities sold at auctions was 14.51% (by types of government securities: 91 days - 16.44%, 182 days - 14.85%, 364 days - 13.91%, 2 years - 15.82%, 3 years - 13.32%), which is 3.25 p.p. less compared to the same period in 2022.
