Paris hosts today the 3rd Moldova Support Platform conference at which a new package of financial assistance for the Republic of Moldova will be agreed upon.
According to Reuters, the meeting is attended by representatives of 45 countries and organizations. The conference is co-chaired by the foreign ministers of France, Germany and Romania: Catherine Colonna, Annalena Baerbock, Bogdan Aurescu. Presidents of Moldova and France Maia Sandu and Emmanuel Macron, as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova Nicu Popescu are also in attendance. As Moldova faces unprecedented challenges from the war in Ukraine, France, Germany and Romania launched the Moldova Support Platform last April to coordinate concrete and immediate assistance from the international community for Moldova and its people. At the first two donor conferences in Berlin and Bucharest, international and bilateral donors pledged Moldova approximately 1.3 billion euros in grants and soft loans for additional assistance in six priority areas. In particular, almost 695 million euros were mobilized at the first conference in Berlin and 615 million euros at the second one in Bucharest. This international aid is all the more important because Moldova is currently experiencing an unprecedented energy crisis, which, with the approaching winter, poses a risk of humanitarian crisis for the Moldovan population. It is noted that Moldova, because of the war in Ukraine, has felt the effects of a sharp increase in food and energy prices, and has received a large influx of Ukrainian refugees. At the same time, Moldova accepted more Ukrainian refugees per capita than any other country. In addition, Moldova, which is heavily dependent on energy supplies from Russia, is facing severe difficulties with the onset of winter and a reduction of natural gas supplies by Russia by about 40 percent, undermining its ability to provide enough electricity for its population. Diplomats say that the new aid allocated today will be used to support Moldova's budget, to cover the cost of electricity supplies and to house refugees. Assistance to Moldova under this program will include loans, grants and direct subsidies to the state budget. // 21.11.2022 – InfoMarket
