The European Union will help Moldova build a new regional hospital in Cahul and allocate a grant of 1.5 million euros for the preparation of a feasibility study for its construction.

The European Investment Bank announced on the 4-th of July that the EIB-managed Eastern Partnership Technical Assistance Trust Fund (EPTATF) and Swedfund are jointly providing €1.5 million to prepare a feasibility study for the construction of this hospital. It is planned that it will expand the range of medical services available in Cahul for more than 120 thousand people living in the south of Moldova, including the treatment of cancer patients (chemotherapy). The regional hospital in Cahul is a vital part of the government's plans to modernize Moldova's healthcare system in the country, the EIB said in a statement. The project also includes the construction of a regional hospital in Balti in northern Moldova. National Health Strategy of the Government of Moldova for 2022-2031 defines the construction of new regional hospitals in Cahul and Balti as the country's priority projects and the key to the sustainable development of the national healthcare system. The EIB and the Council of Europe Development Bank are currently considering financing the construction of these hospitals, with the EIB planning to finance the construction of a hospital in Cahul and the Council of Europe Development Bank in Balti. The new hospitals are vital to improve the ability of the Moldovan health care system to provide high quality and affordable health care to the population. The EIB has been operating in Moldova since 2007 and has to date invested more than €1 billion in 26 operations across the country, supporting EU policy priorities, including projects in transport, energy, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), agriculture, public infrastructure (solid waste, water supply and sanitation) and service sectors of the Moldovan economy. The EIB Eastern Partnership Technical Assistance Trust Fund (EPTATF) was established in 2010 and funds technical assistance operations in the Eastern Partnership countries. Priority areas include private sector development, social and economic infrastructure development, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Trust Fund also supports capacity building programs such as training in beneficiary countries and grants for institutional programs. EPTATF operations are funded by Austria, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and the UK. Swedfund is a Swedish development finance organization whose mission is to promote poverty reduction through sustainable investment in developing countries. // 04.07.2022 — InfoMarket
