The IMF highly appreciates the actions of the Moldovan government and will continue to provide assistance to develop the economy and promote reforms.

This was stated by Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Kenji Okamura during a joint briefing in Chisinau with Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita. He recalled that on May 11, the IMF Executive Board approved additional financial assistance to Moldova to help our country solve the problems that emerged in connection with the war in Ukraine, help attract additional external financing and provide the necessary support to the most vulnerable segments of the population. “That is the purpose of the IMF - to help member countries and people in need. We are working tirelessly to help Moldova and all our member countries in any way we can,” said Kenji Okamura. He praised the country's leadership for decisive actions in the field of budgetary and monetary policy, taken in very difficult conditions, under the influence of war and rising inflation. “The energy sector subsidies and pension increases implemented by the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Gavrilita have helped support the most vulnerable citizens. I would also like to applaud the government's unwavering commitment to vital public administration reforms. Thank you again, Madam Prime Minister, for your hospitality. I very much look forward to continued cooperation with you and your colleagues to further strengthen our partnership in the field of economic development and reform in Moldova,” the IMF Deputy Managing Director concluded. In turn, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita noted that Moldova is going through a chain of complex crises, having previously suffered from a severe drought, a sharp rise in energy prices, and now from the consequences of the war in Ukraine, which disrupted supply chains, access to traditional markets, price stability and carries significant risks to regional and global food security. Natalia Gavrilita noted that the general rise in prices is the most serious threat to the living standards of citizens and the growth of the Moldovan economy, and stressed in this regard the importance of technical and financial assistance from the IMF. Natalia Gavrilita expressed gratitude to the IMF for the decision to increase financial assistance to Moldova under the new financing program. She stressed that the IMF assistance program helps restore the confidence of other partners of Moldova, increase the volume of grant assistance and concessional lending. According to her, the authorities will continue to mobilize assistance under the new program with the IMF and cooperation with other development partners and want to accelerate economic growth, increase the country's resilience, eliminate structural and other vulnerabilities by improving governance, introducing new reforms. "We look forward to further assistance to advance the ambitious reform agenda and to move closer to the EU," the Moldovan premier said.// 14.06.2022 — InfoMarket
