There are tensions between various forces in Transnistria interested in destabilizing the situation, which makes the region vulnerable and creates risks for Moldova - Maia Sandu.
Moldovan president said this after a meeting of the Supreme Security Council, which discussed incidents in the Transnistrian region and developments in the security situation in the region. According to her, what has been happening in the Transnistrian region over the past 24 hours is an escalation of tension. She recalled that a few weeks earlier, there had been reports of bombs planted in schools and medical institutions in the region. These were followed by explosions in the building of the so-called "Ministry of State Security" of the unrecognized Transnistrian Republic, an incident at an airfield in Tiraspol and the explosion of two antennas of the regional radio center in the village of Mayak, Grigoriopol district. "The Moldovan authorities are following with caution and vigilance the events taking place on the territory controlled by the Tiraspol regime. Our analysis so far shows that there are tensions between various forces within the region that are interested in destabilizing the situation. This makes the Transnistrian region vulnerable and creates risks for the Republic of Moldova. We condemn any challenges and attempts to involve the Republic of Moldova in actions that could endanger the peace in the country. Chisinau continues to insist on a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict," Maia Sandu said. According to her, the Supreme Security Council noted the facts of escalation and recommended state institutions to take a number of measures: increase the intensity of traffic checks near the security zone; increase the intensity of patrols and checks on the territory of Moldova and on the border; increase the level of preparedness in relation to the security of critical infrastructure; increase the level of combat readiness of all institutions responsible for ensuring public order and security. "The situation is complex and tense. We remain vigilant. We will take all necessary measures to prevent escalation, to strengthen state security and protect our citizens. We need to remain calm, get information from reliable sources and avoid spreading false information," President said. She urged the media, opinion leaders, public and political figures to behave responsibly in this period, to disseminate only verified information and to avoid emotional manipulation for the sake of ratings. The head of the state warned those who for one reason or another would act to the detriment of stability in society and safety of citizens that state agencies would act promptly to stop any such attempts. "These tensions occur on the territory not controlled de facto by the Chisinau authorities. But this is the territory of the Republic of Moldova, and our citizens live there. Peace, protecting the lives and well-being of our citizens is our priority. The Republic of Moldova is not planning or implementing a blockade of the Transnistrian region. We are still open for continuing the dialogue on the peaceful settlement of the conflict in the region through diplomatic negotiations, which will give the Moldovan people, including the Transnistrian region, a chance for a peaceful and prosperous life," Maia Sandu stressed. While answering the journalists' questions, she said that Chisinau has been informed about the explosion at the Tiraspol airfield. However, the Moldovan authorities do not know its cause. // 26.04.2022 – InfoMarket
