
The IMF cuts forecast for Moldova’s GDP growth in 2022 from 4.5% to 0.3%, and from 5.5% to 2% in 2023.
This follows from the new April review of the World Economic Outlook (WEO) published by the International Monetary Fund. At the same time, the Fund's experts forecast 5% growth of Moldova's GDP in 2027. According to the IMF forecasts, the average annual inflation rate in Moldova will be 21.9% in 2022, 6.5% in 2023 and 5% in 2027. At the same time, inflation at the end of 2022 is projected at 15.7%, and at the end of 2023 - 5%. The current account deficit of Moldova is expected to be 13% of GDP in 2022, 12% in 2023, and in 2027 is expected to decline to 8.5% of GDP. It is worth mentioning that in the IMF’s October World Economic Outlook (WEO) it was stated that the IMF raised the GDP forecast for Moldova from 4% to 5.2%. However, the IMF materials published later, after consultations with Moldova and approval of a new $558.3 million financing program, state that the IMF forecasts 4.5% growth in Moldova’s GDP in 2022 and 5.5% growth in 2023. Earlier, the government of Moldova reduced the GDP growth forecast for 2022 from 4.5% to 0.3%. As InfoMarket agency earlier reported, Moldova’s GDP in 2021, according to preliminary data, amounted to 241.9 billion lei and grew by 13.9%, compared with 2020. The EBRD downgraded its forecast for Moldova's GDP growth in 2022 from 4% to 2%, but expects the Moldovan economy to grow by 3.5% in 2023. The World Bank has downgraded its forecast for Moldova's GDP growth in 2022 and 2023 and expects the Moldovan economy to contract by 0.4% this year and grow by 2.7% next year.
