
The total public debt of Moldova reached a new historical high, exceeding 79.71 billion lei at the end of February 2022.
The previous historical maximum of the total public debt of Moldova amounted to 79 billion 202.9 million lei and was registered at the end of January 2022. According to the Ministry of Finance, at the end of February 2022, the total public debt of Moldova amounted to 79 billion 711.7 million lei, having increased compared to the previous month, by 508.8 million lei (+0.6%), and in general since the beginning of 2022 - by 1 billion 959 million lei (+2.5%). According to the Ministry of Finance of Moldova, the increase in the total public debt in January-February 2022 was due to the growth of the external public debt, denominated in lei, while the domestic public debt decreased. In particular, the domestic public debt decreased by 219.7 million lei (-0.7%) - from 33 billion 281.4 million lei (at the end of December 2021) to 33 billion 061.7 million lei (at the end of February 2022). At the same time, the external public debt in lei over the same period increased by 2 billion 178.7 million lei (+4.9%) - from 44 billion 471.3 million to 46 billion 650 million lei. Herewith, the share of internal public debt in the total amount of public debt of Moldova at the end of February 2022 amounted to 41.5% (a month earlier - 42.2%), and the share of external public debt - 58.5% (a month earlier - 57.8%) . In general, the share of total public debt in GDP at the end of February 2022 is estimated at 27.8% against 32.1% at the end of 2021. Meanwhile, according to preliminary data, GDP in 2021 amounted to 241.87 billion lei, and according to by the end of 2022, it is projected at the level of 286.5 billion lei. The Ministry of Finance noted that at the end of February 2022, the share of public debt payable within 1 year amounted to 26.7% of the total, despite the fact that the Program "Public Debt Management in the Medium Term (2022-2024)" provides parameters of 20-30%. The share of domestic public debt in the total volume of public debt was 41.5% (previously approved parameters: 35-50%), the share of external public debt in a certain currency in the total volume of external public debt at the end of February 2022 amounted to 33% (approved parameters: 20 -45%). The share of public debt with a variable interest rate in the total volume of public debt at the end of February 2022 amounted to 45.7%, with parameters of 25-45%. As InfoMarket agency reported earlier, the total public debt of Moldova in 2021 increased by 9 billion 932 million lei (+ 14.6%), amounting to 77 billion 752.7 million lei. In particular, the domestic public debt increased by 4 billion 045.8 million lei (+13.8%) - from 29 billion 235.6 million lei (at the end of December 2020) to 33 billion 281.4 million lei (at the end of December 2021).
