The Supreme Security Council (SSC) proposes to assess the effectiveness of prosecutors involved in investigating cases of major corruption.

This was stated by the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, following a meeting of the SSC on Tuesday, during which a list of recommendations was formulated to relevant departments, law enforcement agencies and, in particular, the Prosecutor General's Office, regarding activities related to the investigation of large corruption cases. Maia Sandu said that the meeting of the SSC reviewed the measures taken by the competent authorities aimed at preventing the flight from the country of persons under investigation for major corruption. “It turned out that the prosecutor’s office is on vacation, both literally and figuratively, and the only representative of the Prosecutor General’s office who was present at the meeting could not give the necessary answers to the questions of the Council members,” the head of state said. “Some persons involved in major corruption have left Moldova and are on the wanted list, while the competent authorities do not take any measures to return them to the country, to authorize or prosecute them.” Maia Sandu recalled that in 2019, when the prosecutor's office was considered "captured", Vladimir Plahotniuc, Serghei Iaralov, Ilan Sor and Constantin Botnari were able to leave the country, and later, due to the inaction of the prosecutor's office, Vladimir Andronachi, Gheorghe Cavcaliuc and Veaceslav Platon who appear in criminal cases, were able to fly out of the country. “A whole list of people from the groups of Plahotniuc and Platon can leave the country, since they have no ban on leaving. The same Plahotniuc has not been returned to the country for 2 years already. When asked why prosecutors allow situations with the flight of persons involved in major corruption from the country, they answer that the procedures are to blame, and they cannot restrict their travel, because they want to comply with the procedures, ”Sandu said, stressing that legal procedures are selectively observed by the prosecution. According to her, based on the information presented at the SSC meeting, suspicious fraudulent operations and transactions are not investigated by the prosecutor's office, as a result, the stolen funds are spent, and the property is transferred to other persons, respectively, it is more and more difficult to return them. According to the president, the SSC recommended a risk assessment and an assessment of the activities of prosecutors involved in investigating corruption cases. This is necessary in order to make sure that there was no malicious intent in their actions and that they did not contribute to the persons involved in high-profile cases leaving the country and evading responsibility. Sandu stressed that it is necessary to improve the legal framework and, most likely, the Ministry of Justice will propose to the parliament to improve legislation and increase the efficiency of the prosecutor's office. //10.08.2021 — InfoMarket.
