Specifically, members of parliament passed, in a single session covering both readings, the law ratifying the agreement between the governments of Moldova and Romania regarding the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of strategically important transportation infrastructure in both countries. The agreement was signed in the context of connecting Moldova's road network to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), as well as introducing coordinated border control at a crossing point located on Romanian territory. The new agreement will replace a similar document concluded in 2022 between Moldova and Romania, which governed the operation, maintenance, and repair of the road border bridge across the Prut River near Ungheni. The need for a new agreement arose during the implementation of the initial bridge construction project, when new opportunities for infrastructure development were identified. These include adjustments to border control procedures, as well as the possibility of expanding preferential financing for the project from the European Union. Consequently, the agreement now includes the construction of the final section of the A8 Tirgu Mures–Iasi–Ungheni highway, the Iasi–Ungheni section within Romania, and the first section of the Ungheni–Chisinau – Odessa section of the highway on Moldovan territory, including the railway terminal in Beresti. Under the agreement, the Romanian government will provide funding for the construction of the bridge and related infrastructure, the border crossing point located on Romanian territory, as well as the infrastructure facilities provided for in the agreement, including investments on Moldovan territory. The estimated investment amounts to 56 million euros. At the same time, the Moldovan government will finance the construction of the highway section between the bridge abutment across the Prut River and National Road R16.
