Macroeconomics
• In January–May, exports rose by 11.4% to 1.3765 billion euros, while imports increased by 5.8% to 4.172 billion euros; imports remain roughly three times higher than exports. Domestic exports grew by 14.3% to 1.0945 billion euros and accounted for 79.5% of total exports.
Energy and Resources
• Termoelectrica contracted 618,438 MWh, or about 58.6 million cubic meters of gas, from Energocom Trading for October–November: 178,911 MWh for October and 439,527 MWh for November. The gas is intended for heat and electricity generation at the start of the cold season.
• Moldova and SDG Impact Japan are discussing a biogas project: of the plant’s 900 metric tons of distillation waste generated daily, 250 metric tons are to be converted into biogas for use in the production process. Potential emission reductions exceed 10,000 metric tons of CO₂ a year, and the project is expected to reduce the plant’s dependence on natural gas.
Foreign Economy and Trade
• Exports to the EU rose by 11.3% in the first five months to 867 million euros, accounting for 62.99% of the total. The largest markets remained Romania at 26.5% of exports, Turkey at 14.9% and Italy at 9.8%; exports to Germany grew 1.7 times, and those to Turkey and Italy by 24.6%.
• Export growth was driven by oilseeds and fruits (+50.7%), cereals (+44.1%) and vegetable oils (+40.6%), while exports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages fell by 12.1%. In imports, gas and products derived from gas accounted for 11.7%, petroleum products for 9.1% and vehicles for 7%.
Government Regulation
• The State Tax Service, the NBM and banks are preparing to implement the amended CRS for automatic information exchange. Reporting will be extended to e-money products, the scope of information exchanged will be expanded, and customer due-diligence procedures and financial institutions’ internal information systems will be adjusted.
• The new Waste Law provides for reducing the volume of single-use plastic placed on the market by 5% in 2028 and 20% in 2031 from the 2027 level; recycled content in PET bottles must reach at least 25% from 2028 and 30% from 2030. Consultations run through July 23.
• In 2025, more than 13 million lei in fines for competition-law violations was paid into the state budget. The largest sanctions — 5.23 million lei and 5.97 million lei — were imposed for cartel agreements in public procurement.
International Relations
• Moldova and the EU opened negotiations on Cluster 6, “External Relations”; the authorities aim to open all clusters in 2026, conclude negotiations by 2028 and be ready for accession by 2030. More than 90% of the Reform Program measures planned for the first half of 2026 have been completed; the European Commission’s assessment and the next tranche under the Growth Plan are awaited.
Investment and Projects
• The second competition for industrial park projects starts under the 2025–2027 program with a budget of 250 million lei. The goal is to create and develop at least four parks, each attracting at least 20 million lei in investment or registering at least seven residents; applications are accepted from July 17 to August 5.
• Two water-supply projects worth a combined 89.4 million lei are being implemented in the Sîngerei District: about 94 km of main networks will be built, giving about 40,000 residents of 18 localities access to centralized water supply.
Banks and Finance
• Vienna Insurance Group extended until August 28 its mandatory offer to acquire the remaining 4.8% stake in Moldasig from Poșta Moldovei. The package of 28,800 shares is valued at 10.368 million lei, or 360 lei per share; VIG already owns 95.2% of the insurer.
Industry
• InformBusiness presented a concept for an electric rail bus to be produced in Moldova for regional passenger services. The stated specifications are a range of up to 400 km, a speed of up to 75 km/h and capacity for about 100 passengers; it is designed to operate on existing railway infrastructure.
Agriculture
• Restoration of the Crocmaz–Caplani irrigation system will provide water to about 2.5 thousand hectares of farmland and around 60 farmers. The World Bank-supported AGGRI project includes two pumping stations, a reservoir of almost 85 thousand cubic meters and 48.5 km of pipelines.
Business and Companies
• In 2025, the Competition Council received 25 notifications of economic concentrations; 12 transactions were approved and eight continued to be reviewed in 2026. In acquiring the Fourchette-M chain, Moldretail Group committed to a three-year package of conditions and to sell four stores in Chisinau.
Social Economy
• The government will fund 9,013 state-funded places at universities in the 2026/2027 academic year. A total of 1.103 billion lei is allocated for undergraduate and master’s programs; 504 places are allocated separately for residency and clinical internship and 225 for doctoral studies.
