
Moldova's internal state debt reached a new record high, totaling 39 billion 855.5 million lei in late January 2024.
The previous record high of the internal state debt was registered in September 2023, when it amounted to 39 billion 823.97 million lei. Overall, since the beginning of 2024, Moldova's internal state debt has increased by 189.38 million lei (+0.5%). According to the Ministry of Finance, the growth of the internal state debt in January 2024 was mainly due to an increase in the issue of government securities (GS) in the primary market by 189.13 million lei. Specifically, in late January 2024, the debt on government securities issued in the primary market amounted to about 25 billion 970.62 million lei, up by 189.13 million lei (0.7%) from the end of 2023 (25 billion 781.49 million lei), and accounted for 65.2% of the total internal state debt. At the same time, the debt on bonds issued to fulfill the Ministry of Finance's payment obligations arising from the state guarantees of November 17, 2014 and April 1, 2015, amounted to 11 billion 751.2 million lei at the end of January 2024, unchanged compared to the situation at the end of 2023 (11 billion 751.2 million lei). It accounted for 29.5% of the total amount of Moldova's internal state debt at the end of January 2024. At the same time, the debt on converted government securities at the end of January 2024 amounted to 2 billion 133.43 million lei, remaining unchanged compared to the situation at the end of 2023 (2 billion 133.43 million lei) and accounting for 5.3% of the total amount of internal state debt at the end of January 2024. Activated internal state guarantees in January 2024 amounted to 0.27 million lei. According to the data of the Ministry of Finance, in January 2024, the weighted average interest rate on GS sold at auctions amounted to 5.2%; which is lower by 3.42 p.p., compared to 2023. By types of securities, the yields amounted to: GS-91 days - 2.52%, GS-182 days - 5.08%, GS-364 days - 5.52%, GB-2 years - 5.5%, GB-3 years - 5.7% (GS - government securities, GO - government bonds).
