The MIA instant payment system processed approximately 15 million payments worth 13.2 billion lei in 2025 and became a driving force for the modernization of the entire national economy - the NBM

This was stated by Petru Rotaru, First Vice President of the National Bank of Moldova, speaking at an event dedicated to instant payments in Moldova, "Instant Payment Development in Moldova: Implementation, Trust, and Ecosystem Priorities," organized by the NBM. The event brought together payment service providers, financial institutions, and experts in the field to strengthen constructive dialogue and catalyze collaboration across the entire ecosystem. According to the NBM, the event addressed the evolution of instant payments at the international and local levels, the market impact of the MIA system, the regulatory framework, as well as key aspects related to user experience, financial inclusion, and growing acceptance among merchants. The discussions emphasized the role of collaboration between government and industry in accelerating the adoption of instant payments and developing secure, efficient, and accessible solutions. Petru Rotaru, First Vice President of the National Bank of Moldova, who attended the event, emphasized that instant payments are changing companies' approach to managing financial flows, offering speed, efficiency, and a real competitive advantage. "The MIA instant payment system is not just a technical solution, but an engine for modernizing the entire national economy. Its success directly depends on our joint ability—the National Bank of Moldova and payment service providers—to offer citizens a simple and intuitive user interface. With this product, we have removed barriers to digitalization and transformed MIA into an indispensable tool that reduces dependence on cash and brings tangible benefits to both consumers and businesses," said Petru Rotaru. He recalled that the National Bank of Moldova recently launched the MIA instant payment system for instant business-to-business (B2B) transfers through online and mobile banking services offered by payment service providers. Launched in 2024, the MIA instant payment system has achieved widespread adoption and is now used by almost every second adult, promoting financial inclusion and the digitalization of small and medium-sized businesses. The number of users exceeds 900,000 (approximately 50% of the adult population) and has expanded to over 18,000 points of sale across the country. In 2025 alone, the system processed approximately 15 million payments worth MDL 13.2 billion, demonstrating significant changes in consumer behavior. This event, conducted by the NBM, is part of a broader series of initiatives aimed at strengthening financial inclusion and aligning Moldova with European standards in digital payment services. By facilitating this dialogue, the National Bank confirms its role as a catalyst for innovation, striving to create a compatible, efficient, and targeted financial ecosystem that meets the real needs of society. // 09.04.2026 – InfoMarket
