Moldovan citizens will continue to benefit from visa-free travel with Schengen countries – European Commission

As reported by the Moldovan Foreign Ministry, in particular, the European Commission approved its 7th report on the EU mechanism for the suspension of the visa-free regime, in which it noted that Moldova has implemented the recommendations of the previous report. In practical terms, this means that Moldovan citizens will continue to benefit from the visa-free regime with the Schengen countries. The report contains a detailed assessment of developments in the area of visa policy alignment with the EU policy, trends in the field of illegal migration, applications for international protection, return and readmission, cooperation in the field of migration, border control and readmission, as well as security cooperation. The document covers the EU's neighbouring countries, the Eastern Caribbean and Latin America. It also contains a number of specific recommendations for each beneficiary of the visa-free regime. In the case of Moldova, the recommendations concern the alignment of visa policy with that of the European Union, especially with regard to third countries that pose a risk of illegal migration or a security threat to the EU. Moldova is also recommended to continue its efforts to combat organized crime, with a particular focus on the illegal trafficking of firearms and drugs, human trafficking and the financial aspects of organized crime. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova reported that it has taken note of the conclusions and recommendations of the report and is ready, together with other competent national authorities, to continue cooperation with the European Union for their implementation. The recommendations of the European Commission are in line with our country's status as a candidate for EU membership. Over the 10 years of the visa-free regime for short-term trips of Moldovan citizens to the Schengen area, more than 2.5 million Moldovan citizens have used the visa-free regime, making more than 15.8 million trips to the European Union. // 10.12.2024 – InfoMarket.
