
Moldova will receive a grant of 5.4 million euros from the EBRD to develop infrastructure in the field of solid waste management in the north of the country.
In particular, this is provided for by the Grant Agreement ratified by Parliament between Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to finance investment projects aimed at developing infrastructure in the field of solid waste management in the amount of 5.4 million euros for the implementation of the project “Solid Waste in Moldova”, signed on February 22, 2024. The grant is intended to improve solid waste management in the northern part of Moldova, which includes the Briceni, Edinet, Ocnita and Donduseni districts, included in region N8 under the National Waste Management Program. This financing complements the €25 million sovereign loan previously provided by the EBRD to the Government of Moldova, which is part of a wider financing package complemented by a loan from the European Investment Bank and investment grants from other bilateral donors. As Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu noted, it is planned that the grant will allow co-financing in Moldova the construction of a regional landfill in accordance with EU standards, waste sorting and composting infrastructure in Donduseni, the construction of transfer stations in Briceni and Edinet, as well as the purchase of equipment related to the integrated system waste management. In particular, 4.04 million euros from the total grant amount will be spent on the construction of waste management facilities - a landfill and composting station in the city of Donduseni; transfer stations in Briceni and Edinet. The remaining amount will be used to purchase equipment and goods for waste processing and disposal in Donduseni, equipment and goods for transfer stations in Edinet and Briceni. In general, the “Solid Waste in Moldova” project will be implemented until 2027 and involves the construction of infrastructure for solid waste management, the purchase of equipment and machinery for transportation, sorting, processing and composting of waste, as well as the cessation of the activities of unauthorized landfills. The EBRD is the most important institutional investor in Moldova.
