At the Bereşti railway station in Ungheni, with the support of USAID, it is planned to build the first multimodal terminal in Moldova.
The Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization hosted a meeting of the interdepartmental working group on the implementation of an investment project for the construction of a logistics complex in Bereşti, which will be implemented with the support of the USAID program “Institutional and structural reforms in Moldova”. As the department's press service reported, an international company is now developing a feasibility study for a project to develop a multimodal logistics terminal that will unite all types of cargo transportation: land, container and general. The ministry notes that the feasibility study of the project will contain a comprehensive analysis of the current situation in Moldova and the region regarding the existing infrastructure for the transportation of goods, the possibilities of developing a network connecting various terminals in the country and in the region, an assessment of costs and investment options, as well as the need to adjust the legal framework to support the development of such a logistics terminal. Based on this study, the government will be able to identify international investors willing to develop a regional logistics hub in Moldova. As noted by the State Secretary of the Ministry, Viorel Garaz, the development of a regional logistics hub in Bereşti will create many economic opportunities for Moldova, as well as benefits for neighboring countries. “Investments in this project will be large - several million dollars, but the income from this infrastructure will be significant. This is an extremely attractive investment for both international investors and potential investors from the country and region,” said Viorel Garaz. It is worth noting that Moldova does not have an intermodal logistics network that could offer a competitive alternative to road transport, although intermodal terminals (including sea and rail routes) are a key element of the logistics chain for the economy. The main cargo flows from Moldova are in transit from Ukraine to the European Union. In the absence of this infrastructure, Moldova is excluded from active trade exchange, losing significant revenues to the state budget, and partners from the East and West prefer routes that bypass Moldova. With the development of the logistics infrastructure for cargo transportation in our country, bypass routes will become more attractive in the future and it is important to create terminals in the country that will turn the country into a regional hub or hub for international cargo transportation, since this infrastructure will facilitate access to international corridors. At the same time, the volume of goods transported through Moldova has increased significantly over the past 2 years, especially from Ukraine after the logistics infrastructure of transport suffered, as well as due to the regional crisis.// 24.05.2024 - InfoMarket.
