
Moldova's total public debt in June 2023 increased by more than 2.44 billion lei (2.5%) and reached a new record high, exceeding 99.9 billion lei
The previous historical maximum of Moldova's total public debt amounted to 99 billion 031.6 million lei and was registered at the end of April 2023. According to the Finance Ministry, in particular, at the end of June 2023, Moldova's total public debt amounted to 99 billion 937.2 million lei and increased by 2 billion 446.9 million lei, or by 2.5%, compared to the previous month. At the same time, it has grown by 5 billion 277.2 million lei, or by 5.6%, since the beginning of the year. According to the Finance Ministry, the growth of the total public debt in January-June 2023 was due to an increase in both internal and external public debt. In particular, the internal public debt increased by 2 billion 320 million lei, or 6.7%, from 34 billion 492.4 million lei (at the end of December 2022) to 36 billion 812.4 million lei (at the end of June 2023). At the same time, the external public debt in lei (MDL) terms increased by 2 billion 957.2 million lei, or 4.9%, from 60 billion 167.7 million lei to 63 billion 124.9 million lei over the same period. At the same time, the share of internal public debt in the total amount of Moldova's public debt at the end of June 2023 amounted to 36.8% (37.5% a month earlier), while the share of external public debt - 63.2% (62.5% a month earlier). In general, the share of the total state debt in GDP as of the end of June 2023 is estimated at 32.4% against 34.5% as of the end of 2022. According to preliminary data, the GDP in 2022 amounted to 274.21 billion lei, while at the end of 2023 it is forecasted at 308.8 billion lei. The Finance Ministry said that at the end of June 2023, the share of the public debt to be paid within one year amounted to 31.5 per cent of the total volume, while the share of the internal public debt in the total volume of the public debt amounted to 36.8 per cent. The share of external government debt in a certain currency in the total volume of external public debt at the end of June 2023 was equal to 40%, and the share of public debt with variable interest rate in the total volume of public debt at the same date was registered at the level of 49.1%.
