The EU Council approved the allocation of 40 million euros from the European Peace Fund to Moldova to support the country's armed forces and its defense sector.

As noted in the message of the Council of the European Union, within the framework of the approved assistance measure, Moldova will receive 40 million euros within 36 months. These funds will finance the purchase of non-lethal equipment, supplies and services for units of the Moldovan Armed Forces, including technical training, upon request. Approved equipment includes equipment for airspace surveillance, mobility and transportation, logistics, command and control, and cyber defense equipment. This assistance measure was requested by Moldova on 6 February and complements the €40 million assistance measure adopted in June 2022 and the €7 million assistance measure adopted in December 2021. At the same time, for Georgia, the EU Council approved the allocation of 30 million euros from the same European Peace Fund (EPF) for the same purposes - to support the country's armed forces and its defense sector. “Thanks to this new assistance, we continue to support the modernization of the potential of the Armed Forces of Moldova and Georgia. In a challenging geopolitical context and in line with the European aspirations of these countries, we are helping to strengthen their defense sectors and improve their ability to participate in EU military missions and operations. This is the third EPF assistance package for both countries, clearly highlighting the EU's unwavering commitment to security and stability in the region,” said High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. Building on previous EPF support, the latest assistance measures will help improve the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Moldova and Georgia, as well as accelerate their compliance with EU standards and interoperability, which will better protect civilians during crises and emergencies, the Council of the European Union said in a statement. The measures are also aimed at strengthening the capacity of Moldova and Georgia with regard to their participation in EU military missions and operations in third countries. // 04.05.2023 — InfoMarket
