Octavian Armasu: Confidence in the Moldovan leu has been restored in recent years, this reflects the dynamics of bank loans and deposits.

The President of the National Bank said this during an event dedicated to the 28th anniversary of the introduction of the national currency. He noted that confidence in the national currency is a condition for economic development and development of the country's banking system. Armasu assured that the Moldovan leu is constantly being modernized, and one of the strategic priorities of the NBM is to increase confidence in the leu and develop non-cash payments. “At the end of last year, 4 out of 5 residents of Moldova owned payment cards, and today there are 2.3 million payment cards in circulation. Over the past 10 years, their number has grown 2.6 times. Electronic commerce is developing, and today citizens prefer to pay for purchases with payment cards or using mobile applications, ”said Armasu, noting that, due to ease of use, the number of users of automated systems continues to grow. The President of the National Bank noted, that today in Moldova there are healthy, well-capitalized, shock-resistant, stable and transparent banks. “The legislation in this area has been brought in line with international and European standards. Banks have sufficient liquidity to support business and consumption. The reforms allowed the banks to withstand the pandemic and support the population and business, ”he said, stressing that the NBM will continue to make efforts in this area, and digitalization and increasing financial literacy will be a priority.
