
The European Commission, on behalf of the European Union, has allocated to Moldova the second tranche of macro-financial assistance in the amount of 50 million euros.
They are part of a € 3 billion macro-financial emergency package for 10 Enlargement and Neighborhood Partners to cope with the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU said in a statement. Support in the form of Macro-Financial Assistance (MFA) is provided through the provision of loans at very favorable rates. European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Paolo Gentiloni said he was glad that the European Union allocated another 50 million euros to Moldova as financial support. “This is a concrete demonstration of the EU's commitment to helping Moldova overcome the economic and social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. These funds, released after the implementation of agreed policy commitments, confirm the progress the country has made in implementing the measures needed to ensure a more stable and prosperous future, ”he said. It should be noted that the first payment of € 50 million to Moldova under this Macro-Financial Assistance program took place in November 2020. Moldova has made significant progress in fulfilling the EU agreed policy conditions for the allocation of the second and final payment of € 50 million under the current Macro-Financial Assistance program on COVID-19. These included significant measures to improve public financial management in the health sector, to combat corruption, to strengthen good governance and the rule of law, and to improve the business climate. Herewith, Moldova continues to fulfill the preconditions for the provision of the Macro-Financial Assistance in terms of respect for human rights and effective democratic mechanisms, including a multi-party parliamentary system and the rule of law. The decision to provide the Macro-Financial Assistance to 10 Enlargement and Neighborhood Partners in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic was proposed by the Commission on 22 April 2020 and endorsed by the European Parliament and the Council on 25 May 2020.
