The internal public debt of Moldova reached a new record level, amounting to 29 billion 743.4 million lei at the end of January 2021 and increased from the beginning of this year by 507.8 million lei (+ 1.7%).
The previous record indicator of Moldova's internal public debt was registered at the end of December 2020, when it amounted to 29 billion 235.6 million lei. Thus, in January 2021, the internal public debt increased by 507.8 million lei (+ 1.7%). According to the Ministry of Finance, such a change in the domestic public debt was mainly due to a 507.8 million lei increase in the issue of government securities in the primary market. In particular, as of the end of January 2021, the debt on state securities issued in the primary market amounted to about 15 billion 068.84 million lei, which is 507.8 million lei (3.5%) more than by the end of 2020 (14 billion 561.03 million lei), and it accounted for 50.7% of the total volume of the internal public debt. At the same time, the debt on bonds issued for the Ministry of Finance to fulfill payment obligations arising from state guarantees dated November 17, 2014 and April 1, 2015, at the end of January 2021 amounted to 12 billion 611.2 million lei, unchanged, versus the situation at the end of 2020. It accounted for 42.4% of the total internal public debt of Moldova at the end of January 2021.The debt on converted government securities at the end of January 2021 amounted to 2 billion 063.39 million lei, unchanged, versus the situation at the end of 2020, and amounted to 6.9% of the total domestic public debt at the end of January 2021. According to the Ministry of Finance, in January 2021 the weighted average interest rate on government securities sold at auctions was 4.9% (by types of government securities: 91 days - 3.37%, 182 days - 4.92%, 364 days - 5.48%, 2 years - 5.46%, 3 years - 5.85%, 5 years - 6.1%), which is 0.74% less than in the same period of the previous year.
