The IMF mission reviewed Moldova’s progress in the field of macroeconomic statistics and the transition to EU statistical standards

The dynamics of key macroeconomic indicators, in particular GDP and inflation, the transition to the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010), as well as certain aspects of the development of the Consumer Price Index, were presented by Oleg Cara, Head of the National Bureau of Statistics (BNS), at a meeting with the IMF team, whose representatives are in Chisinau on a negotiating mission regarding a new program with Moldova. The BNS head noted that, with the support of the European Commission and in collaboration with partner institutions, the BNS is implementing the transition from the UN’s SNA 2008 system of national accounts to the European ESA 2010 system. To this end, a roadmap for the implementation of the new standards in national statistics has already been prepared and agreed upon with Eurostat. In addition, the BNS, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, and the National Bank of Moldova signed a cooperation agreement on the compilation of public finance statistics, national accounts for the general government sector, and indicators for the excessive deficit procedure. The BNS leadership also informed the IMF delegation that, as of January 1, statistics on international trade in goods in Moldova are primarily compiled in euros, while users still have access to data visualizations in U.S. dollars and Moldovan lei (MDL). Oleg Cara highly appreciated the IMF’s assistance to the BNS in reforming national statistics in accordance with international requirements. Representatives of the IMF delegation, in turn, expressed their readiness to continue providing support in strengthening the capacity of the institution and national partner agencies to produce macroeconomic statistics in accordance with evolving international standards. // 19.05.2026 — InfoMarket.
