Moldova hopes to attract new EU investment in waste management projects across the country, forestry and water infrastructure development, and digitalization of the environmental sector - Alexandru Munteanu

The Prime Minister made this statement during a meeting with Jessika Roswall, European Commissioner for the Environment, Water Sustainability, and a Competitive Circular Economy, as part of the Green Finance and Investment Forum held in Moldova. The discussions focused on Moldova's progress in implementing its environmental agenda and European integration, as well as the support needed to accelerate green reforms and investments. The Prime Minister noted that for Moldova, the environmental agenda is an integral part of the European integration process. "This is not simply about transposing European legislation, but about safer water, more extensive forest areas, cleaner air, more secure communities, and a more competitive economy," Alexandru Munteanu said. The Prime Minister noted that legislative reforms must be accompanied by significant investment, praising the support of external partners, particularly the European Union, in this regard. The government's priorities include expanding waste management projects across all regions of the country, continuing investments in forestry, developing water infrastructure, digitalizing the environmental sector, and strengthening modern monitoring systems. The need to mobilize greater private investment was also emphasized, and the positive results of the recent EU-Moldova Investment Conference held in Chisinau were noted. Jessika Roswall, for her part, emphasized that financial resources directed toward the environmental sector are not costs, but investments in sustainable development, competitiveness, and quality of life. The EU representative emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional capacity in the environmental sphere, developing the necessary framework for implementing environmental policy, and promoting green investments. The serious environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine were also discussed, including the Dniester River pollution crisis that arose following the Russian attack on the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Station in Novodnistrovsk. Another important topic of the dialogue was climate change, decarbonization efforts, and ways to improve environmental education. The parties reaffirmed their mutual commitment to deepening cooperation in environmental protection and supporting Moldova's transition to a greener, more sustainable, and competitive economy. // 29.06.2026 — InfoMarket
