The European Union could double the financial assistance it provides to Moldova under the European Peace Facility to 120 million euros per year – Kaja Kallas

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission made this statement at a joint press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chisinau. Kaja Kallas noted that the European Union had previously provided Moldova with €200 million in assistance through the European Peace Facility, and that yesterday she had seen a new shipment of vital equipment delivered to Moldova. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission said she would propose that EU countries double funding for Moldova under the European Peace Facility to 120 million euros per year, which would be the largest amount of aid the fund has ever provided to any beneficiary country after Ukraine. Kaja Kallas noted that Moldova is one of Europe’s closest partners. “But we also want you to be part of us. And that is why we recognize the progress you have made—the remarkable progress you have made—in carrying out complex reforms. We recognize your pace and determination. These reforms are tangible, sustainable, and benefit the citizens of Moldova,” said Kaja Kallas. According to her, the EU wants to move forward so that Moldova can join the European Union. “But accession is not just a technical process. It is also a political commitment. As we move in this direction, I want to assure you that Transnistria will not be an obstacle to Moldova’s European future,” emphasized the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. She noted that Moldova is already part of the European community, and the second EU-Moldova summit will soon take place in Brussels. She noted that the EU Partnership Mission in Moldova continues to support the country’s institutions in strengthening long-term resilience to foreign interference, and that this joint work provides valuable insights in countering Russian hybrid threats. The head of European diplomacy noted that the issue of the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria will be discussed in potential EU negotiations with Russia on peace in Ukraine. “A few months ago, we proposed a list of what we want to achieve from Russia, as we also have certain requests if Moscow wants the sanctions lifted. As for Moldova, we will submit a request for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria,” said Kaja Kallas. “Our message remains simple and clear: Moldova is not alone. Moldova is part of Europe!” she emphasized. // 08.05.2026 – InfoMarket.
