The Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee calls for the opening of formal accession negotiations for Moldova to the EU across all clusters by the end of 2026
This appeal to the Council of the European Union is contained in the declaration adopted following the 17th meeting of the Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee held in Brussels. The document states that the official opening of accession negotiations for Moldova to the EU would confirm the EU's recognition of Moldova's achievements and strengthen confidence in the enlargement process. Members of the Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee emphasize that our country's accession to the EU would contribute to strengthening peace, security, stability, and prosperity, as well as democratic resilience in the European space. The Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee emphasizes Moldova's significant progress in the EU accession process, which has been achieved in record time, and reaffirms the authorities' efforts to implement reforms and harmonize national legislation with EU law. The declaration also notes the completion of 24 reform stages within the EU Growth Plan, representing the highest level of commitment among candidate countries. The Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee emphasizes the crucial role of parliament in ensuring the democratic legitimacy of reforms and reaffirms the importance of the recently signed memorandum of understanding between the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Grosu, and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, which strengthens parliamentary cooperation initiated in 2021. The declaration also commends the EU's ongoing financial and technical support, including additional funds for justice reform: €5 million to expand the vetting process for judges and €4 million for the e-Justiție project, which will accelerate the digitalization of the judiciary. In its section on Moldova's security, the Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee condemns the repeated incursions of Russian drones and missiles into Moldovan airspace and calls for strengthened cooperation with the EU in the areas of air defense, surveillance, and resilience to hybrid and asymmetric threats. Members of the committee also call for continued support for the development of energy interconnections, the diversification of supply routes, and the protection of critical infrastructure. Parliamentarians welcome the government's intention to complete the construction of three high-voltage power lines and commission them as soon as possible. The Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee welcomes the support provided by the European Union and Romania through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism in addressing the consequences of the Dniester River pollution incident. The Declaration of the Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee also commends the decision of the Moldovan Parliament of 2 April 2026 to reject the CIS Agreement, as it is seen as an important step in distancing itself from the CIS framework and related agreements, which marks significant geopolitical changes. // 06.05.2026 — InfoMarket
