The IMF believes that Moldova, with the support of external partners, will overcome the challenges in the energy sector.
This was stated at a meeting with the leadership of the National Agency for Energy Regulation by representatives of the delegation of the mission of the International Monetary Fund, headed by Ruben Atoyan, who is currently in Chisinau. According to the NAER, during the meeting, the IMF representatives were interested in the latest developments in the electricity and natural gas sectors, in particular, prices and tariffs for energy resources in Moldova and their impact on end consumers. At the same time, Ruben Atoyan requested additional information on the progress of the transfer of the Third EU Energy Package, as well as on the process of certification of the transmission system operators (OST) of electricity - Moldelectrica and natural gas - Moldovatransgaz. Another topic of interest during the discussions was the achievements of the authorities in diversifying the supply of electricity and natural gas in the context of the crisis in the region, price volatility and energy security challenges. Director of NAER Eugen Carpov and representatives of the Agency presented the current process of bringing national legislation in line with the standards of the European Union and the Energy Community, spoke about the efforts of the authorities to ensure the security of supplying the state with energy resources in a crisis, and described the mechanisms for adjusting tariffs for natural gas and electricity in the context of a rapid rise in prices in international markets. Eugen Carpov expressed hope that the preliminary certification of OST Moldelectrica, issued by NAER at the end of last year, would be completed in the near future, and the issue related to the spin-off of Moldovatransgaz would be resolved in the second half of this year. IMF representatives highly appreciated the readiness of NAER' specialists to provide clear and detailed information on areas of competence and expressed the hope that, with the support of external partners, Moldova will overcome the existing challenges in the energy sector.// 06.03.2023 — InfoMarket
