Population of Moldova on January 1, 2022 was 2 million 604 thousand people, having decreased over a year by 0.9 %.
According to preliminary data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the population in Moldova is decreasing annually: in 2014 the figure was 2 million 869.2 thousand people, in 2018 - 2 million 730.4 thousand, in 2022 - 2 million 604 thousand. The data are based on demographic events and were calculated taking into account data on the population with a usual place of residence - which lived in the country for the last 12 months (regardless of temporary absence). At the beginning of 2022, about 52.3% of Moldova's population is female, and 47.7% is male. NBS experts note that net migration, which remains negative, had a significant impact on population decline until 2019. Thus, if in 2016-2019, 42-26 thousand people left Moldova annually, in 2020 and 2021, 7.1 thousand people left the country and, accordingly, 6.7 thousand. In the age structure of the population the largest share accounts for citizens aged 35-39 years (8.1%) and 30-34 years (7.9%), and the least numerous is the age group 20-24 years (5%). The share of able-bodied population of Moldova is about 59.2% of the population. The average age of the population of the country has grown for a year from 39.5 to 39.7 years. NBS notes that the population pyramid shows a pattern of decline in the number of citizens aged 36-56, which reflects the cumulative effect of negative net migration rates for young people in recent decades. The population aging rate (age 60 and older per 100 residents) at the beginning of 2022 is estimated at 22.8 persons per 100 residents, compared to 22.3 persons in 2021. // 06.06.2022 – InfoMarket
