
About 20.8% of the permanent population of Moldova is elderly people
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, as of early 2019, 558.4 thousand citizens over 60 lived in Moldova. Approximately 56.6% of the elderly live in rural areas, 60% of the elderly are women. Every third elderly person in Moldova is aged 60-64 years, and 11.3% are over 80 years old. The NBS notes that, the planet’s population is aging: every 11th inhabitant of the Earth has reached 65 years of age, 9% of the population is over 65 years old, and by 2050, it is expected that the elderly population on the planet will exceed 16%. The population aging rate has reached 17.5%, having increased by 3.3 percentage points over the past 5 years. Moreover, women have an aging rate of 6.3 percentage points higher than men: 23.8% versus 17.5%. It is noted that if at birth in 2018 there were 100 girls per 106 boys, then after 60 years this ratio will decreases 1.6 times - there will be 67 men per 100 women. The average life expectancy of older people after 60 years is 19.2 years for women and 14.8 years for men.
