According to the National Bureau of Statistics, every year the number of citizens of the country under the age of 18, as well as their share in the total population, decreases. In 2014, children made up 19.7% of the population. In 2018, 32.6 thousand children were born, which is 4.3% less than in 2017. Last year, the birth rate was 9.2 people per 1 thousand inhabitants, and this figure decreased against the previous year (9.6). More than 51.7% of newborns are boys, respectively, 107 boys per 100 girls. About 3.5% of children were born prematurely, and 5.8% of children at birth weighed less than 2500 grams. The average age of primiparous mothers is 25 years old (23.9 years in villages and 26.8 years in cities). In 2018, every 5th child was born out of wedlock. According to statistics, in 2018 in Moldova there were 1485 pre-school educational institutions, which were attended by 149.5 thousand children. In the system of general education (1246 institutions) in 2018-2019 there were registered 334.2 thousand students, which is 1.5 thousand more than in the previous academic year. The educational system has covered about 73.6% of children aged 7 to 18 years. In 2018, there were about 10.6 thousand children with disabilities in the country, 45.1% of them with severe disabilities. The average amount of disability allowance for children was 702.2 lei, which is 1.7 times more than in 2014. According to statistics, in 27.7% of Moldovan households there is 1 minor child in maintenance, in 34.5% - 2nd children, 11.8% - 3rd and more children. Large families most often live in rural areas.
