The Moldovan government is analyzing the idea of taxing purchases from Temu, Joom, and other Chinese marketplaces - Eugen Osmochescu

The Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization made this statement while speaking on Radio Moldova. He acknowledged that the growth of online orders from China, including through platforms such as Temu, where prices are significantly lower than in traditional stores, is a sensitive issue, and the authorities are now discussing options for regulation and the possible introduction of a tax on these parcels with goods. Eugen Osmochescu noted that this is primarily related to the fiscal sphere, and discussions on this issue are ongoing. The aim is to protect local producers, but also local consumers. The authorities want to find a balance between the interests of buyers and the interests of local traders who sell the same products from China at higher prices. “We need to study this issue because it concerns people's safety, consumer protection, and the protection of our producers in Moldova,” said Eugen Osmochescu. When asked directly whether an additional tax would be imposed on parcels from China, the Minister did not rule out this possibility. “It is possible, of course. Since various scenarios are being considered and different options are being discussed, I cannot say for sure,” he said, hinting that the final decision will depend on the calculations of the Ministry of Finance. // 02.12.2025 – InfoMarket.
