The EU ambassadors to Moldova officially informed Premier Pavel Filip about suspending the allocation of the European Union’s macro-financial assistance

The EU Delegation to Moldova reported this, noting that the EU Ambassador to Moldova Peter Michalko and the ambassadors of the EU countries in Chisinau stated this at a meeting with the Prime Minister of Moldova and members of the government they held in order to inform of the EU position after declaring null and void the Chisinau Mayor election. European ambassadors reaffirmed the messages of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, and the European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, expressed in their joint statement, as well as the concerns in the capitals of the EU countries due to the fact that the decision on the invalidation of the election results and the way of its adoption deprived the citizens of Chisinau to democratically elect the mayor on June 3. It was noted that such a decision undermines the citizens' confidence in state institutions, which was emphasized in the resolution of the European Parliament adopted on July 5 concerning Moldova. On this occasion, the need was noted for the Moldovan authorities to find democratic solutions to this unprecedented situation. It was noted that the EU expects from the Moldovan authorities to guarantee the independence of the judiciary, in accordance with international obligations assumed, as one of the main principles of the rule of law, the most important element of democracy long awaited by Moldovan citizens. It was noted that the EU countries will continue to closely monitor the reform process and the functioning of state institutions in Moldova and the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU, which is aimed at improving the lives of Moldovans. In addition, the Moldovan side was reminded of the European Commission’s message that the allocation of the first tranche of the EU macro-financial assistance remains suspended until the conditions regarding the implementation of political prerequisites for democracy, the rule of law and human rights are met. // 09.07.2018 – InfoMarket.
